End of Summer Splash

Don’t let August slip by without a mountaintop getaway. It’s time to escape the beach traffic, the heat and humidity of the city, and the pressure of work. It’s time to escape to a world where you can unplug and recharge. A place where family comes first. A place to savor the final days of summer.

Here are some of our favorite activities.

Swim! The pools and Lake Monocan are still open and families are enjoying splashing and cooling off.

Tee off! The golf courses stand ready go challenge golfers.

Love Tennis! Mountaintop tennis provides a cool perspective that you have to experience.

Ahhh Spa! The therapists at the Spa are ready to work their magic to release tension and pamper you with massages, body wraps, and skin and nail care.

Food-cation! Dining options abound, both on the mountain or in the valley below.

Explore Nelson! August is the perfect time to visit all that Nelson County offers – from beer, wine, and cider to the bounty of the summer harvest. Blackberry season is here!

Take some time to explore our lodging special offers and packages. Or let out reservation specialists help you find the perfect option for you. But don’t delay, summer will eventually turn into fall. But that’s another story - with a great excuse for a colorful fall getaway!

Nelson County's Brew Ridge Trail and Virginia Craft Beer Tour

The Brew Ridge Trail has taken the craft brewing world by storm offering award-winning craft beer and cider made in Virginia, along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The two major highways in Nelson, Route 29 and Route 151, each offer a selection of the best breweries and cideries in the area. Book end your travel plans for day of arrival and day of departure with samplings of some of the breweries and cideries.

Day One, Route 250 and Rt. 29:

Traveling from the north along Route 250 and Route 29, you can tour Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet, VA and Blue Mountain Barrel House in Arrington, VA.

Starr Hill is the second oldest craft brewery in Virginia and has led the way for the growing craft beer community in the region. Enjoy a tour of their production facility and then relax in their tap room and sample the Northern Lights IPA and Jomo Lager.

Blue Mountain Barrel House, located in Arrington, VA is a sister to the better-known Blue Mountain Brewpub, which has been in Nelson County since 2007. The Barrel House, a production brewery with tasting room, focuses on Blue Mountain’s higher-end beers, those that require special processes and special ingredients, including, Dark Hollow, their imperial stout aged in oak bourbon barrels. BlueMountainBarrel.com

Other nearby attractions include Oakland Museum, Blue Moon Antiques, Fortunes Cove Preserve, four wineries, Drumheller’s Orchard and Saunders Farm Market.

Day Two: Resort Fun

Spend the day at the resort and enjoy summertime at its best. Check out our restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner then fill your day with activities from golf and tennis to swimming and hiking and more! Adventure awaits.

Day Three: The Journey Home

Leave some time for a leisurely ride home and with stops at Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Wild Wolf Brewing Company or Bold Rock Cidery

Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub: Devils Backbone’s accolades include top awards as small brewpub and small brewing company of the year at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival. When the weather is right, partaking of a meal on their patio while taking in the mountain ridges in the distance is a tasty sample of Virginia’s allure.

Wild Wolf Brewing Company: Located in Nellysford under shady elm trees, mother and son team, Mary and Danny Wolf offer their wide selection of hand crafted beers such as Alpha Ale and Blonde Hunny. The restaurant serves the freshest local foods in a century old, revitalized Nelson County school house.  Canine companions are always welcome in the outdoor Biergarten, weather permitting.

Bold Rock Cider: Local apples are crushed to make crisp, drinkable hard cider in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. In addition to the Virginia Draft and Virginia Apple ciders, Bold Rock produces the Crimson Ridge Vat #1 and Crimson Ridge Vintage Dry, more complex blends and a sparkling alternative to champagne. Tours take visitors from cider history to modern production.

Other attractions include: Rockfish Valley Nature Trail, Tuckahoe Antiques, Rockfish River Gallery and the Retail Shops at Rockfish Valley Community Center, five wineries, two hard cideries and two distilleries.

Or leave while on the mountain, leave the driving to our friends from the Monticello Wine and Beer Tours. Tours available on Fridays and Sundays!

Cheers!

Tips for July 3rd Fireworks

Let the festivities begin! Here are some tips to make your July 3rd and fireworks at Wintergreen successful.

Fireworks

  • FIREWORKS ARE ON JULY 3, but we have activities all weekend.
  • Fireworks start at 9:30 pm. The best place to see the sky light up is below the Blue Ridge Terrace on the grassy hill.
  • There is no admission fee.

Scenic Chairlift Rides

  • Ride the Blue Ridge Express from 1-8 pm on July 3.
  • Cost: $5 for ages 6 and older, 5 and under ride for free. Complimentary for Members and extended family with valid ID.

Parking

  • Arrive early. We may have to close the gate due to capacity. Last year it closed around 8 pm.
  • Lots 1, 2, A & B will be for Wintergreen Resort Members. Parking attendants will direct you to available parking.
  • Avoid the mass exodus after the fireworks, stick around for a special performance from Groove Motion after the fireworks show. The Edge will also have live music from Jimmy O after the fireworks, so there is no need to rush home.

Do Bring

  • Sweater for the evening, mountain temps are cooler.
  • Blanket and lawn chairs to make the day more comfortable.
  • Picnicking is permitted, but be sure to check out the food court offering all your summer favorites.

Don't Bring

  • Alcohol. Outside alcohol is not permitted due to ABC licensing. Coolers will be checked and outside alcohol will be confiscated. However, a nice selection of beer, wine, refreshments and food will be for sale on the Blue Ridge Terrace.
  • Personal fireworks.

Happy Birthday America!

Holiday Highlights

Another amazing holiday is almost here: our July 4 Jubilee! We're starting the festivities early this year with fun activities planned from June 29 through July 4. Here are some of our favorite highlights you won't want to miss.

Silent Disco Dancing, Monday, July 2
It’s dancing with friends, but in your own world. Put on your headphones and tune into one of three channels of music – from 80s, 90s, or who knows! DJ Andrew will get all generations of dancers out on the dance floor and moving to the groove. Just imagine, you can dance to your own beat, you can sing to your own band and no one will even notice if you miss a beat. It’s guaranteed smiles and laughter - for FREE! Join us in The Edge from 8-11 pm.

Petting Zoo, Tuesday, July 3
Geese and rabbits and goats, oh my! Plus a miniature horse, pot-bellied pig, chickens and more! All kid friendly and a great way to make new furry friends. We'll be up at the Blue Ridge Express, in the shaded, grassy area.

Chairlift Rides, July 3
Soar down and up the mountain on the Blue Ridge Express. It's still fun even without the snow! Chairlift runs from 1-8 pm.

Family Adventure and Fun Races, June 30, July 1-2
Meet us at The Lookout Deck from 3-4:30 pm for the Family Adventure and Fun Race. Choose your style of race - Adventure Race: hike/run the mountain using a map and clues to find flags. Fun Race: Families work together on six fun-filled obstacles and trivia questions for bonus points. Prizes awarded at 5 PM. FREE

And don't forget the Fireworks on July 3 at 9:30 pm. Come early to get the best seats and enjoy the bands, brews and BBQ. See all activities and details

Wintergreen Water Fun

What’s the best thing about summer? Water fun! And Wintergreen has lots of ways to enjoy splashing and cooling off from the summer swelter.

The Aquatics & Fitness Center is headquarters for pool time fun. Pack up your noodles, floaties, beach balls, goggles and flippers and plan to beat the heat splashing and playing in the outdoor pool. Chaise lounge chairs are available for catching some rays while you work on your summer tan.

Summertime weather can bring an afternoon thunderstorm. No worries at Wintergreen, just head to the indoor pool to continue the water works!

Feeling the need for some beachtime? Lake Monocan, a hidden gem in the valley, is the perfect spot to spend a summer’s day. Of course there’s plenty of water fun with the trampoline and slide, but you can also rent big toys – an aquacycle, paddleboard, canoe or kayak. It’s a great way to get some cardio and work those muscles. It will also justify an ice cream treat from the snack bar! So fill your day with beach volleyball, sand castles, a stroll around the lake, fishing from the dock or just lazing in the sun reading a book.

Don’t forget our water hikes. Stop by The Nature Foundation for information on the Shamokin Fall hike or Paul’s Water Creek. And if you’re up for a short road trip, Crabtree Falls is the ultimate waterfall hike. It features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones that fall a total distance of 1,200 feet. Cool!

See you on the mountain – or the pool. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Celebrate Dad This Weekend

We have lots of ways for you to tell Dad you love him. This weekend is the perfect opportunity to escape to the mountains and play outside with your family. Temps are starting to soar, but Wintergreen will be 10-15 degrees cooler. Check it out!

Start your weekend on Friday with Happy Hour at The Edge. It’s Bakers and Drafts, a baked potato bar with all the toppings and drink specials. Or Take Dad to the Prime Rib Night at The Copper Mine Bistro. Either way, come hungry, leave happy!

For the Dad who golfs, stop by the Stoney Creek Golf Course for Play with the Pros. It’s a quota game with the pros and you can commiserate with them over a beverage following play.

Also on Friday evening join our friends from The Nature Foundation for a Star Gazing Party. They’ve teamed up with the Charlottesville Astronomical Society for a party under the stars. They’re bringing high powered telescopes to gaze at the spectacular constellations of Cygnus the Swan, the sizzling Summer Triangle and other celestial bodies. It will be out of this world!

Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday features a Build Your Own Bloody Mary or Mimosa bar. They’ll have all the fixings for you to use your creative juices to craft your very own garnishes for your morning beverage.

Treat Dad to a sports massage anytime this month and Dad will save 10%. He’ll feel better for it.

The Nature Foundation is hosting a Father-Child Birdhouse Workshop. It’s a memory maker for both Dad and child.

Sunday morning The Copper Mine Bistro has put together a fabulous breakfast buffet with all of Dad’s favorite breakfast items. It’s a great way to start the day.

Of course you can hit the tennis courts, test your mettle at golf, discover the beauty of the Blue Ridge on any of our hikes, splash and play in the pool or the lake, take aim at archery, soar to new heights on the bungee trampoline, and fly down the mountain on The Zip or The Plunge. We have plenty of ways to keep everyone happy!

See you on the mountain!

Devils Knob Opens April 14!

Some may look for their favorite spring flower or bush to bloom, but some of us look for other signs that spring has arrived. At the top of the mountain, when we see the fairways grow green and the golf maintenance team hard at work, we know spring is really here! Saturday, April 14, marks the first day that Devils Knob, Virginia's highest course, opens for another season of fantastic mountain golf! Book your tee times now by calling 434-325-8250.

Up To Par

Wallace and his golf maintenance team have been busy readying the course with greens verticutting and tree and debris clean up, and the course is looking great (check out the pictures below). But Wallace isn't the only one who has been preparing - PGA Head Professional Matt Burch has also been working hard to get another great season underway.

Matt's been making sure the Pro Shop is full of new merchandise for you to enjoy, as well as carving out time in his schedule for lessons. Spring is a great time to brush up your golf game and set yourself up for an enjoyable season. We offer a number of instruction options, from Daily Clinics to Daily Clinics to Private Lessons, to 3-Day School Academies. Daily Clinics are offered at Devils Knob at 2 pm for $30. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by calling (434) 325-8255.

Devils Grill Snack Shop

The  Devils Grill Snack Shop will also open on April 14. This year we are offering an expanded and upgraded Snack Shop Menu with Nathan’s Signature Dogs-Fully Loaded!, and great new breakfast options, wraps, sandwiches and more, made fresh daily!

Please note, access to Devils Knob Golf Course is limited to Resort Guests, Members and their Guests, and parties of eight or more.

Wintergreen Wedding Showcase

Wedding season is almost upon us, and no matter what kind of style you are envisioning, the most important day of your life calls for a picture-perfect setting with precise planning.

The past weekend, we hosted a Wintergreen Wedding Showcase for our 2018 and 2019 brides and grooms to help them plan their big day. Our specialty is careful and thoughtful planning, and making the process easy and enjoyable for our amazing couples. We think the most relaxing way to plan a wedding is by spending time at the resort, enjoying everything we have to offer!

On Saturday, 26 couples arrived on the mountain and were treated to a Welcome Party. The entrance to Devils Grill sparkled with a dusting of surprise snow, while inside we kept warm with a variety of hors d'oeuvres, a slider station and beverage samplings. We even had fire pits and a s'mores station on the patio. Rhianon Ham, Wedding Coordinator, Michael Hammes, Director of Food and Beverage, and Robert Turner, Director of Banquets were all there, eager to get to know all the couples and give advice about their upcoming wedding weekends. But Saturday was just the warm up!

On Sunday, The Commonwealth Ballroom was transformed into a massive tasting event with different stations and displays for our guests to sample. They were able to dream up their perfect wedding menu as they made their way around the ballroom. Additionally, we had a variety of preferred local vendors on site to answer any and all questions that they had about their wedding weekend. The ballroom was dressed with custom lighting, beautiful florals, delicious cake and music playing and a variety of other vendors scattered throughout the ballroom and the ballroom lobby.  It was such a pleasure to spend time with our brides and grooms, and show them how wonderful we can make their special days.

If you're planning a special day and wish you could enjoy this kind of treatment, give Rhianon a call today! She can be reached at 434-325-8139, rham@wintergreenresort.com, or by filling out a request for proposal. Some dates remain for 2018 if you're on a shorter schedule, but we're also booking for 2019 and 2020 if you like to think farther ahead!

Thanks For a Great Winter! Slopes Will Remain Closed.

The mountain saw some snow overnight, but it is not enough for us to reopen the slopes. Thanks to everyone who came out this winter. We had a ton of fun skiing, riding and tubing. Mother Nature sure threw us some curveballs, but that didn’t stop this from being a great year, full of happy memories of time spent on the snow with family and friends (both old and new!). In the end, love and fun conquers all!

Come see us in the spring, summer and fall for more fun and mountain memories! We’ve got Easter coming up, Devils Knob, Virginia’s Highest Golf Course will open, and before we know it, summer will be here! Blues, Brews & BBQ on Memorial Day Weekend, July 4th Jubilee with FIREWORKS, Nike Tennis and Golf Camps, fun at Lake Monocan, thrills at Discovery Ridge, and so much more.

See you on the mountain soon!

March is Crazy!

Two weeks ago, who would have thought we’d still be open AND making snow. Some people thought we were CRAZY, but we never gave up, and now we’re having crazy fun!

So many people came out all last week and we saw lots of smiles and laughter. That's what keeps us going, and why we fight - to share that fun with all of you! We will continue to fight and extend the season as long as possible.

Snowfarming

We’re holding onto our core slopes which are in good shape and getting better. Every day that we get deeper into March, the better conditions get. We've been running limited snowmaking since Friday, which has greatly enhanced the surface. And our Snowfarmers are proving themselves to be real heroes again. With their expertise and the use of a new winch cat, they were able to reopen Upper Wild Turkey. Talk about crazy!

What’s up for this week? Temps are cold and we’re open 9 am-3 pm Monday-Thursday and 9 am-5 pm next Friday-Sunday. Stay tuned for what happens after March 11. We have a good chance to make it longer!

Welcome March! February was full of battles with Mother Nature, but we didn't give up. We kept fighting, and now the cold temps are coming back. March never looked so good!

We're open for skiing and riding today, 9 am-3 pm, AND snowmaking temps return tomorrow, maybe as early as tomorrow morning!

Our Snowmaking Team is ready and waiting. The plan is to maintain our current slopes and enhance the experience. Nighttime temps look good for snowmaking for the foreseeable future.

New Snowfarming Tool

Plus the snowfarming tool has arrived and is being put to good use! We've gotten a Prinoth Winch Cat as a demo machine. One of the challenges of snowfarming is that every day, skiers and riders push snow down the mountain. A winch cat is a really efficient way to pull large amounts of snow back up the mountain. We can get to pockets of snow that have been pushed down the slope and pull the snow back up into more usable areas. The Prinoth Winch Cat has a pulling force of 4.5 tons!

We've already used the winch cat to widen Upper Eagles Swoop, Upper Cliffhanger, and to pull some snow from Lower Dobie up to Upper Dobie.

Slopes will continue to operate daily with the following schedule/rates:

  • Mondays-Thursdays:  9 am-3 pm
6-hour Lift Ticket (All Ages): $39
4-hour Lift Ticket (All Ages): $29
  • Fridays-Sundays: 9 am-5 pm
    8-hour Lift Ticket (Adult): $59
    4-hour Lift Ticket (Adult): $49
    8-hour Lift Ticket (Youth/Senior): $49
    4-hour Lift Ticket (Youth/Senior): $39

Colder weather and snowmaking returns Friday night! Friday through Tuesday nights all look good for snowmaking. The plan is to maintain our current slopes and enhance the experience. So keep doing your snow dances and THINK COLD!

Slopes will continue to operate daily with the following schedule/rates:

  • Monday-Thursday:  9 am-3 pm
6-hour Lift Ticket (All Ages): $39
4-hour Lift Ticket (All Ages): $29

    4-hour Lift Ticket (Youth/Senior): $39

What happens after Sunday? Stay tuned!

We’re Not Giving Up!

We’re in the midst of a tough battle with Mother Nature. Overnight temps were not as kind to us and we lost some trails overnight. However, we are still skiing and riding on 11 trails, 9 am-5 pm, and we’re not giving up! Our snowfarmers will be out tonight moving snow around and we hope to re-open additional trails for this weekend.

Cold air is in the forecast for next week. We don’t know when exactly it will arrive, but we are ready and waiting. We even have a special piece of snowfarming equipment arriving on Wednesday to help. We’re fighting for every last flake.

Like so many Olympians in PyeongChang right now, we’ve trained, we’re strong and want to give you the best skiing and riding we can. What if Shaun White had retired after the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi? We don’t want to wonder “what if?” We’re giving it all we got.

It's spring skiing, folks! Come out and have some fun!

For information about hours of operation, slope openings and closures, please see This Week at Wintergreen.

Open For Skiing, Riding, and Tubing!

You may have noticed some warmer temps lately, but...

WE STILL HAVE SNOW!

We're open every day this week, 9 am-9 pm for skiing, riding and tubing. If you're looking toward the weekend, have no fear, we will still have snow. Trail count may be changing but we will still have a variety of terrain open, including The Highlands.

That's right - THE HIGHLANDS WILL BE OPEN THIS WEEKEND.

Virginia weather can be a roller coaster and we're used to the ride. We just plan ahead, make snow when we can, and snowfarm all night to groom the slopes to the best possible conditions.

Remember, spring skiing is really fun. Warmer temps mean less layers - you can even work on your tan!

And, it's perfect weather to Ski & Tee - ski at the top of the mountain, then skip down to the valley for a round of golf at Stoney Creek!

Ski and Tee Special

For multi-sport enthusiasts who enjoy hitting the golf course with the same gusto as they approach the slopes, Wintergreen Resort has the ideal opportunity for guests who want to ski in the morning and challenge to the golf course in the afternoon.

Talk about the perfect “winter” and “green” combo - Wintergreen’s Ski & Tee offer allows guests to present a same-day lift ticket for a free round of afternoon golf at Stoney Creek Golf Course, 3,000 feet below the mountain in the scenic Rockfish Valley.

Great Holiday Weekend

It has been a great holiday weekend and we're open 9 am-9 pm for skiing, riding and tubing today! 24/25 slopes are open today with spring-like conditions. For mogul fans, Outer Limits is bumped up for you to enjoy. There are also some moguls on the upper left side of Cliffhanger for added fun.

We were able to make snow most of Saturday, so thanks to SNOWPOWER and snowfarming we were able to regain a slope (Outer Limits) for Sunday. Despite some challenges from Mother Nature, our snowmakers and snowfarmers continue to perform miracles.

Check out these pictures from some of the events we had this weekend! We had parties on the Blue Ridge Terrace, Tap Takeovers, boot toss, glow stick parade, tennis events and more! If you missed it or just want some more, check our Olympic Events to see what we have coming up!

SNOW is Starting!

The weekend is off to a great start. We had flaming desserts at check-in yesterday - Bananas Foster - yum! Then there were snowcat rides for the lucky few who got to check it off their bucket list.

But the big news is... IT'S SNOWING! At the moment, some big flakes are coming down. We're still not sure exactly what we're going to get, but temps are cold and snow has started, so that's always a good sign! Thanks to everyone who did snow dances - keep them coming!! Snowmaking returned very early this morning too and we will continue to lay down new snow throughout the day.

Roads are in good shape - come up and enjoy the POWDER that is on the way!

And in between runs, make sure you check out all the fun events happening this weekend. There's a Ski Boot Dance Party starting at 1 pm on the Blue Ridge Terrace With Stable Craft Brewing!

Red Sky In Morning

Have you ever heard this saying?

Red sky at night, sailor's delight;
Red sky in morning, sailor take warning.

Well, there was a red sky this morning, and according to the old saying, that means a storm is on the way. What exactly the storm will bring is up for debate. And what the top of the mountain gets, will be different from where you are. The weather models seem to change on us every hour, so we aren't really sure if we'll get a wet mix or 3-5 inches of snow. Start your snow dance!

We're hoping for the best in terms of weather, but either way, it's going to be a really fun weekend! We have a ton of events scheduled, including:

  •  Ski Boot Dance Party
  • Olympic Party on The Blue Ridge Terrace
  • FIREWORKS
  • See all events

We still have a bunch of snow and the conditions are good. We closed a few trails today, but they will be back tomorrow after some heavy "snowfarming" by our awesome snow groomers. Our snowmaking team is coming in tonight and we will be making snow at every opportunity.
