Spring at Wintergreen is among the richest times of year to venture into the woods. Before the trees leaf out, wildflowers take advantage of the extra light and produce a colorful array of flowers that carpet the forest floor. Here are a few of the best trails to find a great diversity of wildflowers at Wintergreen.
Old Appalachian Trail (Cedar Dr to Laurel Springs): This remnant of the 2190 mile trail that used to run through Wintergreen is a wildflower powerhouse. Trillium, lady slippers, fly poison, azaleas, rhododendron, wood betony and many more wildflowers bloom prolifically along this trail. This west –northwest aspect creates a moist, rich environment that is ideal for flower diversity. It also offers spectacular views into the Shenandoah Valley. The trail is rated moderate-difficult.
Highlands Leisure Trail- This heavily used trail is often thought of as a way from the Mountain Inn to the top of the mountain. Once flowers begin to emerge, this trail is transformed to a botanists dream. This moderate .5 mile trail offers some of the best flowers Wintergreen has to offer. From wild geranium to Canada lily this hike constantly surprises hikers with its constant barrage of flowers. Combine this hike with a stop at the Trillium Field, across Wintergreen Drive from the top of the trail, and the hiker increases the viewing pleasure by adding thousands of white and pink trillium to hiking experience.
Cedar Cliffs Main – Hemlock Springs Trail: One of the best loop hikes at Wintergreen is Cedar Cliffs Main around to Hemlock Springs trail. This moderate 2 – 2.5 mile loop starts with the dry, rocky ridge on Cedar Cliff main. This trail is loaded with mountain laurel and rhododendron which offer a great late spring flower show. At the end of the trail is a wonderful overlook into the Shamokin Gorge. On the rocky outcrop is a bunch of lovely bleeding hearts. Turn onto Cedar Cliffs South to join up with Hemlock Springs. This wet, streamlined trail is a great change of pace to Cedar Cliffs Main. It is loaded with ferns, may apple and some pink and yellow lady slippers. This section of hiking is accessed using Grassy Ridge gravel road found at the bottom of Grassy Ridge Drive.

Second, we actually have another first… today is the first day of spring!
While we love winter at Wintergreen, the truth is that the fun doesn’t stop when the snow melts.
Spring comes to the mountain with a parade of wildflowers that have been lovingly preserved by Wintergreen Resort and The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events celebrating spring:
Needless to say, during springtime the mountain becomes a hiker’s paradise. With over 30 miles of marked hiking trails ranging from the rugged and steep to the short and sweet, Wintergreen Resort is a hiker’s paradise. Trails explore waterfalls, unbroken wilderness, and incredible views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish Valley.

Thank you to everyone who came out last weekend and participated in all our great events. From Be Bold Weekend, to Mardi Gras and the Terrain Park Rail Jam, it was a really fun weekend for all. Thanks to the hard work of our snow crews, we were able to make
enough snow to refresh slopes. Skiers and riders brought their own fun and reported that conditions were surprisingly good, especially considering the weather we’ve had to contend with!
It’s too early to tell for sure, but meteorologists are saying that a storm is brewing that could bring us as much as four inches of natural snow on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Some optimists are projecting even greater accumulations, but who knows?! As we get closer, keep your eyes on the forecast and do your snow dances!

This roller coaster winter continues! We’ve hit another cold spell and we project that we will operate daily 9 am-5 pm through March 12. You still have time to get in your last runs of the season before it’s a sweet memory. Check the website for the most up-to-date information on conditions and open terrain.
Temps dropped Wednesday night, allowing us to hold onto the snow that we’ve got. We have also been able to add some limited snowmaking to freshen the trails we have open. Night skiing, tubing, and Ridgely’s Fun Park are all closed for winter, but we’ve still got snow for skiing and riding, and there’s still plenty of fun to be had on the hill!
Speaking of fun… it’s Be Bold Weekend with Bold Rock Hard Cider, and Mardi Gras with Wintergreen Adaptive Sports!
We’re open 9 am-5 pm today, temps are dropping, and there’s still fun skiing and riding to be found at Wintergreen!
Taking on Mother Nature is no easy feat, but we’re doing our best to make and preserve as much snow as possible! Yesterday’s storm did not bring as much rain as expected (around ½ inch), and temps dropped early, allowing us to turn on a few fan guns for a few hours.
We expect to be able to get some limited snowmaking done tonight through Saturday or early Sunday morning. There’s even a slight chance of natural snow on Friday night. Weekend temps will be more seasonable than we have seen lately – it will feel like winter! We’re expecting bluebird skies and lots of fun. It’ll be WAS Mardi Gras and Be Bold Weekend with Bold Rock Hard Cider. The Highlands will be open this weekend, but keep an eye on the Mountain Cams and the Slope Report for updates.

We are open and operating as normal today but we are expecting severe thunderstorms to arrive in the area around 1 pm which may force slope closures. Today we will only be selling 4-Hour Lift Tickets for $39.
Come get your skiing and riding in early!
After the storms roll through we plan on getting in some limited snowmaking late Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening, possibly Sunday morning. Despite the challenging weather, our crews are still fighting for every flake of snow. In addition to the limited snowmaking Thursday through Saturday, there is a slight possibility of some natural snow on Friday night. Bottom line is the snow's still cold and we're still having fun on the hill! Keep an eye on the Mountain Cams and the Slope Report for updates!
The Plunge has closed for the winter season. We invite you back for the spring/summer/fall version of tubing.

Today we are open 9 am-5 pm for skiing and riding! This rollercoaster winter continues, and our snow crews continue their amazing work. Snow conditions are spring-like and we are watching the weather daily to make the most of it.
Skiing and Riding – Open daily 9 am- 5 pm through the end of the season.
Night Skiing – Over for the season.
Tubing – Against all odds, the miracle workers on our snow crews were able to rebuild a limited number of lanes this weekend for tubing. Tubing will be closed midweek and we will reevaluate on Thursday if we can open it back up for next weekend.
Snowmaking – Saturday night brought back cold temps and we were able to fit in some limited snowmaking on Saturday and Sunday. Looking into our crystal ball, there is a chance for some limited snowmaking on Friday.
Thanks to everyone who came out this past weekend to enjoy the snow. Keep thinking COLD thoughts!

Becoming a Ski Patroller includes great perks like first tracks and beautiful sunrises, but the best reason to do it is to help keep skiers and riders safe. Spring skiing is like the cherry on top of a sundae, the kiss at the end of a date, or the victory lap after a big win. It's that little extra
celebration of the end of another winter season.
Spring skiing is also your reward for braving the harsher aspects of winter. It's your reward for bundling up through the cold months, for guarding against chapped lips and icicles in your hair. Spring skiing lets you leave all that behind and just come play in the snow!
Warmer temps, longer days, quieter slopes and great deals -- what's not to love?
Everyone at Wintergreen certainly loves spring skiing and riding, including everyone's favorite bear: Ridgely! Josh and Ellen caught up with Ridgely last week and got a bear's eye view of winter.Last Edited by The Mountain Messenger on Wednesday, February 22, 2017
A big thanks to everyone who came out this holiday weekend! Lots of fun was had by all -- skiing, riding and tubing on great snow with spring skiing temps.
The weather may be a bit warmer than usual but we still have a lot of snow and almost all of our trails are open. Despite temperature challenges, snowmakers (or should we call them snow magicians?) are working hard to deliver an enjoyable surface. Their hard work has paid off, we have maximized snow production at every turn and preserved trails and conditions to an amazing degree. Keep an eye on The Slope Report and keep thinking cold.
In the meantime --now is the time to enjoy some spring skiing!

Yesterday, The Blue Ridge Express transformed into The Lift to Love from 1-4 pm. Popular love songs filled the air, a hearts-and-flowers decorated archway formed over the singles lift lines, and speed daters took their chances at finding "The Powder of Love."
Cupid and The Captain of Love were on hand to facilitate the event. Cupid's arrow struck many unsuspecting skiers and snowboarders who were then persuaded to join in on the fun. Before we knew it, singles and couples alike were joining the event. After all, Valentine's Day celebrates all kinds of love, from love for a significant other, friends and family, or just love of snowsports!
Participants were given Hershey's kisses from Cupid's kissing booth, but some took the kissing booth a bit more literally. A drawing will be held to give away a date at Bold Rock Hard Cider to one lucky participant. Participants - don't forget to sign up for the drawing!
An amazing time was had by all, and Wintergreen would like to thank everyone who helped make the event a huge success, from Cupid and the whole crew who ran the event, to all the participants who were such great sports!Last Edited by The Mountain Messenger on Wednesday, February 15, 2017
It’s amazing what our team of
snowmakers can do! It’s been a roller coaster of temperatures lately, but
we have been ready at every turn to make the most of cold spells and turn it
into lots of snow. If you need to see it to believe it, check out the pictures
below that were taken this morning! Better yet, come
see for yourself – blue bird skies and new surfaces.
The week ahead is full of snowmaking opportunities. We
cranked up SNOWPOWER last night at 1 am, and made snow until noon. And we’ll be back at it tonight. Then we should be able to
make snow Wednesday night through Friday.
What does that mean for you? Great snow conditions all week that continue through the holiday weekend. Next weekend may be a bit warmer, but all that will mean is warmer air above all our great snow.

Temps dropped and we were ready. SNOWPOWER came roaring back early this morning and we are blanketing the slopes with fresh fluffy white stuff for the weekend! Slopes will be refreshed and ready for a great winter weekend of skiing, riding and tubing! Keep an eye on the
Slope Report, you may even see some slope additions!
Another winter classic is on the horizon: Presidents’ Weekend is February 17-20. We’re seeing nighttime snowmaking temps next week which will make for a special looong weekend full of great snow and winter fun. In addition to excellent skiing, riding and tubing, we have wonderful activities
planned, including Demo Days by Freestyle, Wintergreen Rail Jam, great music slopeside, live entertainment at The Edge, and NASTAR!
It’s too soon to be completely confident of the weather next weekend but we’re seeing seasonable temps and clear skies in the forecast.Last Edited by The Mountain Messenger on Friday, February 10, 2017
This Valentine's Day, discover The Powder of Love on top of the mountain at Wintergreen Resort.
On February 14, The Blue Ridge Express becomes The Lift to Love from 1-4 pm. We'll have a separate line for speed dating, we'll pair you up and send you off with a card full of conversation starters to make talking easy. Remember, you both already have snowsports in common, and have fun!
If you don't discover The Powder of Love with your match, simply part ways after unloading the lift and try again after your next run. If you find a chairlift love connection, continue skiing together or meet up later. Who knows, dinner may be on someone else!
Whether you find your Snow Match or not, this will be a low-pressure, fun event with Hershey kisses for all daters and a special visit from Cupid!
This event is free with a valid lift ticket.Last Edited by The Mountain Messenger on Monday, February 06, 2017
The air is crisp, the snow is fresh, and all we need now is you! Conditions are some of the best we've had this season, so don't miss it!
Tons of snowmaking over the last week has allowed us to open and reopen almost all of our terrain. If you check our Slope Report, you’ll be happy to see lots of open trails and continued snowmaking. We’ll have strong snowmaking throughout this weekend, with some daytime snowmaking on open trails to build our base and keep the surface super slidable.
Mark your calendars for these great upcoming events:
It's Groundhog Day and here at Wintergreen we have our own resident weatherman, er, we mean weather animal. Yesterday’s rain turned to a snow late yesterday afternoon. About an inch of new snow in addition to the hard work of our snowmakers and groomers has resulted in 12 open slopes today, up from 7 yesterday. We even had some snowmaking early this morning. The warm, wet weather is behind us now and we expect
to resume snowmaking on Thursday. Go SNOWPOWER
It’s all good news moving forward. The Highlands are still open.By this weekend we hope to be able to reopen many of the slopes that were recently closed, such as Tyro, Tequila and Sunrise. A long run of snowmaking is almost here. Winter is back and it’s time to come play!

Join us for the first holiday weekend of 2017! Snowmaking has allowed us to open more terrain and build our base. We plan to open Upper Wild Turkey, Cross Cut and possibly Upper Diamond Hill this weekend. Even though we’ve had a couple warm days, the highs on Saturday and Sunday will be near 40 degrees – great for enjoying outside fun.
There is also a possibility that ice overnight will force operational delays Saturday morning. If that happens, we will post updates on the website blog, and on social media. We expect the earliest updates will be around 7:30 am. Stay tuned!
January is Learn to Ski & Ride Month, and we suggest our Discover Skiing and Riding Program. If you’re new to winter sports, check out this How-To Video about putting on ski and snowboard boots. SNOWPOWER has a had a phenomenal run – nearly a week of round-the-clock snowmaking, aided by over 7 inches of natural snow. Talk about a perfect storm! When Mother Nature cooperates, we certainly make the most of it. During this past run, our snowmakers converted 29 million gallons of water into snow, opened more terrain, and laid down exquisite corduroy. And, we’re not done yet!
Coming up is one of winter’s great loooong weekends: Martin Luther King Weekend. We expect slope conditions to be fantastic. We’ve had lots of happy skiers and riders commenting on how great the ski surface is right now, and how well trails have been groomed. The current deep freeze will mellow out by this weekend, resulting in more enjoyable, seasonable winter temps. Plus, we’ll have almost all our trails open for you to enjoy, so come on up!
New Trails Opening By Friday:
