Insider's Tips for Scenic Fall Drives

Fall is a great time for a road trip to see the fall foliage and one of the most well-known routes is just a mile up the road from Wintergreen. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through Virginia and North Carolina, providing miles and miles of opportunity to see the splendor of fall.

Insider's Tips

  1. Try the Blue Ridge Parkway Midweek
The Parkway gets crowded during fall weekends, so try an alternate route on Saturday or Sunday.
  2. Take Advantage of Hiking Opportunities
Our favorites are Humpback Rock, The Priest and White Rock Falls.
  3. Check The Foliage Report
To get an idea how fall color is progressing check the Weekly Fall Foliage Report from the Department of Forestry.

Sample Itinerary: A Loop Through Nelson County

One of our favorite rides! Leaving Wintergreen, turn right to go up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, turn south and enjoy a leisurely drive through the fall foliage for 15 miles to Route 56.

Go east on Route 56 down to Crabtree Falls. If you’re up for a hike, it’s a two mile climb up to the start of the fall, but it’s worth the hike!

Continuing down Route 56, you’ll come to the apple orchards that dot the countryside. Fitzgerald’s, Silver Creek, Dickie Brothers, Seaman’s and Saunders Brothers are all along Route 56.

Go north on Rt. 151 and enjoy the winding road across Brent’s Mountain. You’ll turn left on Rt. 664 to head back home to Wintergreen.

Insider Tips

  1. Pack a Picnic
In addition to scenic overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Crabtree Falls is a great place to enjoy a picnic. But no need to bring dessert, Saunders Brothers sells homemade ice cream!
  2. Stop by Dickie Brother’s Orchard
Pick Your Own Apples and Pumpkins, plus they also sell fresh pressed apple cider, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and cashews. See the Blue Ridge Fruit Loop for more info on all the orchards.
  3. Check out Devils Backbone at the corner of Route 151 and 664
Before heading back up the mountain to Wintergreen, stop by Devils Backbone for a refreshing sampling of their micro-brews, or continue down Route 151 for other stops on the Brew Ridge Trail.
