Wintergreen Summer Music Festival - Week Three!

The beat goes on! The Wintergreen Summer Music Festival presented by Wintergreen Performing Arts continues through August 7, so there's still time to hear some wonderful music in the mountains! Check out these upcoming highlights for the week ahead:

Tuesday, July 26
No Plaid Required: An Evening of Bagpipe Music

Bring a blanket and a picnic dinner, and enjoy the festive sounds of Albemarle Pipes and Drums, a traditional Scottish and British Isles-style pipe and drum corps from Charlottesville, Virginia. Program will be at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton. There is no fee, but donations are accepted.

Wednesday, July 27
Wild Wednesday: Motown! Dance the Night Away with Shinola Brown

Join Richmond’s Kelli Strawbridge and his band Shinola Brown for an evening of traditional Motown favorites as well as a few more modern surprises. Bring your dancing shoes, and get ready to enjoy the “sound that changed America!”

Thursday, July 28
Double Bassist Joseph Conyers in Recital

Performing his debut recital, Assistant Principal Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra Joseph Conyers will be joined by our own Peter Marshall on piano for an unforgettable evening of music-making. This is sure to be a highlight of the Festival!

Friday, July 29
Film Friday II: Sherlock, Jr. with Buster Keaton and LIVE music!

Rated one of the funniest 100 movies of all time by the American Film Institute, Sherlock, Jr. introduces us to the misadventures of a movie projectionist and janitor, played by Buster Keaton. Our Academy composers, under the guidance of Daron Hagen, will compose a new score to this film, to be performed by our Wintergreen Festival Artists, under the direction of Artistic Director Erin Freeman.

Saturday, July 30
Classics III – “Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History”

In this ground-breaking concert, we’ll explore the legacy of females in the history of music. Far from novelties, women have made a substantial impact throughout history. Artistic Director Erin Freeman will lead the orchestra through a world-premiere commission by Wintergreen’s own Gilda Lyons. Pianist Inna Faliks, who made her Chicago Symphony debut on the first movement of Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, will perform the entire work. And, the orchestra will perform a Symphony that YOU chose: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

Sunday, July 31
A Boulangerie: Coffee Concert IV

Nadia Boulanger stands as one of the most important figures in 20th and 21st century music. Living in France in the 1900s, Boulanger’s influence spans from Igor Stravinsky to Astor Piazzolla, from Quincy Jones to our own former Artistic and Executive Director, Larry Alan Smith.

Monday, August 1
The Aurelius Quartet – The 2016 Fellowship String Quartet

Formed in 2013, The Aurelius String Quartet hails from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Winners of the state and regional divisions of the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition, these four young musicians bring the concept of artistic promise to a new level!

But there’s so much more planned – Morning Seminars, Music in Unusual Places, Academy Concerts, Coffee Concerts, Masterclasses and much more! Visit WintergreenPerformingArts.org for the full schedule, and to buy tickets!
