IS PURE FUN FOR 5TH AND 6TH GRADERS

WINTERGREEN, Va. (Nov. 13, 2012) – Imagine how many different things bring smiles to the faces of fifth and sixth graders.  Add another to the list: Wintergreen Resort is continuing its popular Snow License Program, which offers complimentary ski and snowboard passes to every 5th and 6th grader in the greater Mid-Atlantic region, good for three visits throughout the upcoming winter season.  Students currently enrolled in fifth and sixth grade (including those who are home schooled) and who reside in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, North Carolina or West Virginia are eligible.

The 5th & 6th Grade Snow License® Program, which begins Jan. 2, 2013, is designed to encourage skiing and snowboarding opportunities for youngsters, with a particular focus on those who are new to winter sports.

“We feel it’s important to introduce snow sports to new audiences,” said Jay Roberts, vice president of resort operations for Wintergreen Resort, located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, twice named "Best Ski Resort" by the readers of WashingtonPost.com and one of the Mid-Atlantic's premier ski areas.  “This program, while innovative in our area, is part of an industry-wide effort focused on attracting newer, younger participants and converting them into loyal skiers and riders.”

Students enrolled in the Snow License program must be accompanied by a paying adult who will receive a $15 discount off the eight-hour session lift ticket (adult midweek rate: $50) or a $10 discount off the four-hour session lift ticket (adult midweek rate: $40).  An additional adult or sibling may purchase a lift ticket at the same discounted price.  There is a limit of two Snow License participants per paying adult.

Program participants and accompanying adults/siblings are eligible to purchase rental equipment for $25 per person or $30/person for rental and a group lesson.  Rental equipment requires pre-registering from the Wintergreen Resort web site.

Students will need to bring a report card to validate their enrollment in fifth or sixth grade.  The program is not valid on Saturdays and January 20 or February 17, 2013, and is eligible for only one visit per week.

The mountain’s hours of operation for the 2012-13 season, as they apply to the Snow License Program, are:

  • Mondays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and non-holiday Sundays: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Fridays: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For skiers and snowboarders, Wintergreen offers 26 slopes on 129 skiable acres with two high-speed chairlifts. The ski area is undergoing the largest snowmaking expansion since automating the slopes during the 2001-2003 seasons.  This newest project offers a massive increase in production with the same incredible snow quality. State-of-the-art York® computerized snowmaking system gives Wintergreen the SnowPower to consistently offer the Mid-Atlantic’s best skiing and snowboarding surfaces. Wintergreen is the only ski area on the East Coast to have 100 percent of its terrain covered by automated snowmaking

The resort features the region’s most extensive terrain, with ample slopes for beginners, intermediates and experts alike.  Fourteen slopes are lighted for night skiing and the resort’s longest run is 1.4 miles.  Two terrain parks and the region’s top snowtubing park add to the winter recreational offerings.

Visit  www.wintergreenresort.com/snowlicense for further details and to enroll in the program.  Participants will be required to submit an application, and on their first visit to Wintergreen will need to stop by the ski office to pick up Snow License credentials. Call 434-325-8057 for more information.
