WINTERGREEN RESORT NOW WIELDING ‘SNOWPOWER’

Popular Central Virginia winter destination can make twice as much snow, twice as fast

WINTERGREEN, Va. (Dec. 21, 2012) – Armed with one of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems, Wintergreen Resort in central Virginia will home to “SnowPower” this winter season.

The only ski area on the East Coast to have 100 percent of its terrain – 129 skiable acres – covered by automated snowmaking, Wintergreen Resort’s new high-tech equipment will allow the property to open its trails sooner, provide better snow coverage and keep its slopes open longer.  Resort officials say the result for skiers and snowboarders will be gold-standard surfaces with a uniformity of depth and consistency of snow quality from top to bottom.  Can you say, “SnowPower?”

Part of a previously announced plan to pump nearly $12 million in infrastructure improvements, Wintergreen Resort’s new 5 million gallon water storage tank and upgrades to the York® computerized snowmaking equipment will make twice as much snow twice as fast as the resort’s previous system, which was installed more than a decade ago.  Can you say, “SnowPower”?

“We will be making more snow across all temperatures – important since Virginia can provide us with interesting weather – and allow us to make a lot more snow overnight,” said Hank Thiess, general manager of Wintergreen Resort.  “We are eagerly awaiting the start of our winter season since our new ‘SnowPower’ system will allow us to consistently offer the Mid-Atlantic’s best skiing and snowboarding surfaces.  As we like to say here, ‘more snow equals more fun!’ ”

In optimal conditions, Wintergreen Resort’s state-of-the-art snowmaking system, boasting more than 400 powerful snowguns and 45 weather stations, could over a football field with 37 feet of “perfect” snow in just 24 hours.  Manufactured snow is often judged superior to traditional snow due to its quality, consistency and structure, to say nothing of the increased production opportunities, effectively doubling the snowmaking capacity this season.  Can you say, “SnowPower?”

Wintergreen offers 26 slopes with two high-speed chairlifts, with ample slopes for beginners, intermediates and experts alike.  Fourteen slopes are lighted for night skiing and the resort’s longest run is 1.4 miles.  Two terrain parks and the region’s top snowtubing park add to the winter recreational offerings. An array of lessons – including a “Guaranteed Learning to Ski & Ride program – and rental equipment also are readily available throughout the winter season.

Accommodations at Wintergreen Resort are ideal for families as they include 250 villa-style condominiums and rental homes, from studio suites to seven-bedroom homes, each offering a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable living area, most with fireplaces and a balcony or deck.

Wintergreen Ski Patrol, which is dedicated to ensuring an enjoyable experience for all mountain guests, was the 2011 winner of the Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol Award from the National Ski Patrol.  The 130-member, all-volunteer organization is primarily responsible for the rescue and emergency care of customers, employees and visitors to Wintergreen Resort.
