Fly Fishing

Nestled in 11,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Wintergreen is in close proximity to some of the best fly fishing Virginia has to offer. Quiet valley ponds and lakes, cascading mountain streams, and the nearby James River provide guests with a variety of angling opportunities. Wintergreen's Fly Fishing services are designed to accommodate the inexperienced to the expert angler. Wintergreen's Orvis-Endorsed instructors have the perfect classroom setting at Lake Monocan to introduce students to the art of Fly Fishing, or anglers can experience the thrill of fishing for trout in the mountains or smallmouth on the legendary James River with a knowledgeable and friendly guide.

Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing School and Guiding Services

Wintergreen offers half and full day fly fishing classes under the watchful eye of an Orvis-Endorsed instructor. Fly-casting instruction is based on The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting and inexperienced to expert casters are welcome. All instruction includes the use of Orvis fly rods and equipment, and all classes are held at the facilities at Lake Monocan and on the private ponds surrounding Stoney Creek.

Guided Trout Fishing Trips

Wintergreen offers half and full day guided trout fishing trips for fly fishermen on private water on Stoney Creek or on nearby streams. Wintergreen's Stoney Creek is a private freestone mountain stream that has predictable spring and summer insect hatches and a large population of wild and stocked brook trout. For anglers looking to explore the surrounding area, trips may also be taken to a number of other nearby mountain streams or special regulation trout water. We use no more than a 2:1 angler/guide ratio to ensure the highest level of attention. Our approach to guiding is to put the angler on fish that he/she can catch, and to suggest flies and techniques that have proven effective on the waters being fished. The emphasis is on safety, enjoyment and catching fish. Instruction is available upon request. Lunch and drinks are provided for full day trips.
