Your safety is our priority. Skiing and snowboarding are exciting and low-risk when you follow smart riding practices. Staying in control and being aware of others on the slopes makes for a better experience for everyone. Before you head out, take a moment to review the Responsibility Code and other safety guidelines. Thank you for respecting our rules and staying safe on the slopes! Ski Patrol: 434-325-8365

Your Responsibility Code

  1. Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid people or objects.
  2. People ahead or downhill of you have the right-of-way. You must avoid them.
  3. Stop only where you are visible from above and do not restrict traffic.
  4. Look uphill and avoid others before starting downhill or entering a trail.
  5. You must prevent runaway equipment.
  6. Read and obey all signs, warnings, and hazard markings.
  7. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  8. You must know how and be able to load, ride and unload lifts safely. If you need assistance, ask the lift attendant.
  9. Do not use lifts or terrain when impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  10. If you are involved in a collision or incident, share your contact information with each other and a ski area employee.

Approved Sliding Devices

SKIS: Allowed with a working brake binding system or a retention device

SNOWBOARDS: Allowed with a retention device (Snowboard binding considered ok)

TELEMARK SKIS: Allowed with a retention device or a working brake system (please be aware of releasable telemark bindings as they typically do not have a retention device)

MONOSKIS: Allowed with a working brake system or retention device

SNOWBLADES: Allowed with a retention device

ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT: Mono-ski, dual-ski, bi-ski, slider, outriggers, and tether are allowed.  Any other devices must be approved by the management of Wintergreen Resort.

SNOWDECKS: Allowed, but must have metal edges and a leash

Below are a few examples of what Wintergreen Resort does NOT allow for alternative sliding devices which includes but is not limited to the following:

SKIBIKES / SNOWBIKES: NOT allowed

SNOW TRIKES: NOT allowed

SNOWSHOES: NOT allowed on the mountain or on any lift

SNOWSKATES: NOT allowed

BOOT SKIS: NOT allowed

SNOWBIKES NOT allowed

PLASTIC SNOWBOARDS: NOT allowed (plastic snowboards that do not have metal edges)

CROSS COUNTRY SKIS: NOT allowed on the mountain or on any lift

SLEDS/DISCS: NOT allowed

SNOWSCOOTERS: NOT allowed

TOBOGGANS: NOT allowed

GHOSTY: NOT allowed

AIRBOARD: NOT allowed

BODYSLED: NOT allowed

TANDEM: NOT allowed

SNOW TUBES: NOT allowed on the ski mountain or any ski lift (only Wintergreen Resort snow tubes can be used for Tubing operations at the Plunge Tubing Park)

ZIPFY: NOT allowed

Uphill Travel

Earning your turns is another great way to enjoy what Wintergreen Resort has to offer and get a great workout.  We’re happy to be included in your fitness and touring routine.

Below is our Winter Uphill Travel Policy.  For your Safety and Others around you, please read and abide.

Wintergreen Resort reserves the right to suspend Uphill Travel or revoke guests Uphill Travel Privileges at anytime.

General Guidelines

  • Check-In Required – All uphill travelers must check in at Ski Patrol Dispatch, located slope-side on the first floor of Skyline Pavilion.
  • Access Pass Required – A valid season pass or daily lift access pass is required for uphill travel.
  • No After-Hours Access – Uphill travel is strictly prohibited outside of operating hours.
  • Start Time Restrictions
    • Highlands: No uphill travel permitted after 3:15 PM.
    • Tyro: No uphill travel permitted one hour before dusk.

Uphill routes are subject to change based on conditions and operational needs. The designated route for the day will be determined by Ski Patrol or Mountain Operations.

Primary Uphill Routes (when open):

  • Upper & Lower Diamond Hill
  • Lower Tyro to Upper Tyro
  • Lower Wild Turkey to Outer Limits
  • Lower Wild Turkey to Upper Wild Turkey
  • Upper & Lower Eagle’s Swoop (stay skier’s left when descending)

🚫 Uphill travel is NOT permitted until at least one of these routes is open.

Trails Off Limits to Uphill Travel

For safety reasons, the following trails are always closed to uphill travel:

  • Upper & Lower Cross Trails
  • Upper & Lower Dobie
  • Upper Cliffhanger

Your safety is directly affected by your judgment. Observe and follow your Uphill Skier Code:

    1. Get permission to travel uphill from Ski Patrol Dispatch
    2. Stay to the sides of the trails
    3. If the ski area designates specific uphill routes, always stay on them
    4. Don’t climb on closed terrain
    5. Always be aware of traffic coming down the hill at you
    6. Avoid climbing on steeper trails
    7. Avoid grooming and snowmaking operations
    8. Follow any directives from ski patrol or other mountain staff
    9. Only use equipment with ski brakes or leashes
    10. Be a good customer
  • Allowed Uphill Travel Equipment and devices with metal edges such as Skis with Touring Bindings, Split boards, or Tele-skis. You must have a brake or retention device (snowboard bindings OK). You Must Be Able to Ski/Snowboard the Downhill Routes.
  • Uphill travel by means of skinning is permitted. Snowshoes and Cross-Country Skis are not permitted.
  • Pets are not permitted on trails or slopes
  • Uphill Winter Travel is not allowed during non-daylight hours and normal operating hours of operation. Ascend and Descend the mountain on the designated routes. For your safety and that of our staff, do not deviate from the designated route.
  • Before accessing resort premises, make others aware of your uphill travel plans, including anticipated arrival and departure times. Charge your cell phone before you go and always travel with your cell phone. BE AWARE THAT ON-MOUNTAIN CELL PHONE SERVICE IS NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE OR RELIABLE.
  • Ski Patrol is not available during Uphill travel hours. Call 911 if there is an Emergency
  • Always use the buddy system—travel with a party of at least two or more. If you decide to go alone, be sure to advise someone in advance about your activities.
  • It’s your responsibility to make yourself visible to operations personnel. Wearing bright and/or reflective clothing and a headlamp is highly recommended when you are participating in uphill travel.
  • Do not stop in high-traffic areas.
  • Be alert and yield to all downhill traffic, including skiers and snowboarders.
  • Resort and mountain operations run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Stay clear of all mountain operations and equipment, including but not limited to grooming machines, snowmaking equipment, snowmobiles and lifts.
    • Always yield to all resort personnel, mountain-operations equipment, machines and vehicles.
    • Stay clear of all snow-grooming winch operations. Be alert for warning beacons on vehicles. Be alert for equipment and machinery. If you encounter winching operations, stay off the trail. Winch cables may be located underneath the snow surface one moment, then high in the air above the surface the next. Grooming tractors and equipment suspended on winch cables may be located thousands of feet away. These circumstances can make dangers and hazards hard to see or invisible to both uphill travelers and equipment operators.

Drone Policy

Our top priority is safety for guests, employees, and resort property, as well as concerns for individual privacy. Wintergreen Resort prohibits the operation or use of remote aerial systems or drones by the general public – including recreational users and hobbyists – without the prior written authorization from the Resort. This prohibition includes drones used for filming or videotaping and any drone use by media or journalists operating above or within 100 ft of Resort boundaries.

This prohibition on drone operations or use extends to any drone launched or operated from Resort property and drones launched from private property outside the Resort boundaries.

FAA rules and regulations may govern any authorized operation of aerial drones, local law enforcement, and policies separately established by this Resort, including certification, training, insurance coverage indemnification requirements, and waivers or releases of liability.

Any violation of this policy may involve suspension of your skiing or snowboarding privileges, or the revocation of your season pass, as well as confiscation of any drone equipment, and may subject violators to any damages, including, but not limited to, damages for violations of privacy and/or physical or personal injuries or property damage, as well as regulatory fines and legal fees.
